Although being a narrower field than modern behaviorism, it historically emphasized the study of the observable behavior. John Watson being a pioneer of behaviorism, had a notion that environment has a profound effect on physiology and therefore on the behavior of the study subject. The followers of the behaviorism often practiced on laboratory animals. Their primary interest was to explore stimulus-response relationships. Through the creation of stimulus scientists were able to alter the physiological state of the studied object and thus learn the important relationships between the stimulus and the related response. Behaviorism was a part of psychological discipline that helped to study human's behavior and discover mysteries of physiology. Physiology in its turn allowed expanding the science of behaviorism.
