Teleconferencing is a term used when workers fulfil their job functions remotely from the office where they are based, most commonly it applies to employees which work from home instead. The meaning of teleworking often means to employees working at other company sites but the meaning varies to where ever they have decided to work.

The minimum facilities needed to enable a teleworker are:

§ Personal computer

§ Modem

§ Software

§ E-mail

§ Telephone or Mobile

A benefit for the company wishing to use teleworking is that they can have reduced office and parking space requirements as the employees may only pop in for a visit so they will not need any offices or parking spaces. More improved staff to motivation and retention as they will still have deadlines but will have there peace and quite as they will be alone at home with no distractions.

The disadvantages are that it is more difficult to for managers to monitor and control the staff as they are not watching them for the duration of there work, additional costs are also needed to provide the employee with home computer, software etc and it also provides a possible security threat to sensitive company data which could be accessed from the computer by anyone else.

Three benefits of using an information technology system are the speed, accuracy and reliability.

§ Speed, Computers can process millions of instructions every second which allows them to complete a task in a short amount of time.

§ Accuracy, The results of a calculation carried out by a computer are likely to be completely accurate, such as typing errors.

§ Reliability, in many organisations, computer based information systems operate for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and are only stopped when making repairs or routine maintenance.
