Obesity is one of the most serious chronic diseases affecting individuals today in our country and has been increasing among U.S citizens for many years now. Obesity has often been measured by “desirable” or “relative” weight. If someone wanted to find their healthy body weight they could use the body mass index charts which simply takes body weight in kilograms and divides it by height in meters, squared (Health Implications2). These charts only measure if a person is overweight and only estimate body fat. A heavily muscled athlete may be overweight using any of these charts and have very low body fat. So to determine if a person is obese or simply over weight do to increased muscle mass. One needs to use methods such as skin fold measurements and under water weighing to detect excess fat.

Many people feel that the primary cause of obesity has to do with psychological and genetic factors. In fact these are all secondary causes. The primary cause of obesity is energy imbalance (Brown3). This just means our body absorbs more calories than we can burn. The way the majority of us eat has a lot to do with this and its no surprise so many people are obese. Fast foods are not the only problem with giving us to many calories. Many people eat other nutritionally bad foods like snack foods, butters and desserts. At the same time people are overfeeding themselves. They are becoming less physically active letting machines and vehicles do all the work for them. Combine this with overeating and bad nutritional diets and it’s easy to see how the energy balance gets all mixed up. People in there 40’s and 50’s tend to be more vulnerable to obesity due to a slower metabolism and decreased physical activity (Cottrell35). It is increasing though in all major race groups including younger adults ages 24 to 40 (Cottrell36).
