of ideas and issues related to the case. These notes should be brought to class and can serve as a basis for your participation in discussion. (Some students find that it's best to perform the first two steps in the reading procedure a day or so before the last two steps.)

3. Read the case carefully; as you read, extend and embellish your notes.

4. Prepare the writing assignment (usually a debate argument based on an issue raised by the case)..

Additional guidance on case preparation is presented in Ronstadt's book, The Art of Case Analysis (Third Edition), particularly Chapters 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 12. I recommend that you review these chapters as soon as possible.

Case Analyses

The class will be divided into teams for purposes of preparing case analyses. Teams assigned primary responsibility for a case must prepare a one-page analysis of the case in sentence-outline formBone analysis from each such team. The analyses should be incorporated into an e-mail (no attachments please) and sent to the instructor at jensen.7@osu.edu prior to the class session in which the case is presented and discussed; only Ae-mailed@ analyses will be accepted. Analyses will be reviewed for overall quality and recorded as S+ (100%), S(93%), S-(85%), or U (80%). No late analyses will be accepted.

PARTICIPATION IN CLASS DISCUSSION

Participation in class discussion enhances the learning experience for all members of the class and is required. The individual in-class discussion score will be based on a combination of peer evaluation and instructor evaluation. Near the end of the quarter, each student will be asked to submit a rank-ordered list of the ten students in the class who made the most significant contributions to in-class discussion. In addition, the instructor will maintain a record of individual contributions to class discussion.

EXAMINATIONS

Two examinations will be given. The first exam will be a mixture of computational exercises and short essays and will be given in class under Aopen-book@ conditions. Make-up exams must be approved by and arranged with the instructor before the scheduled examination.

The second examination will be a take-home exam distributed on Friday of the eighth week of class. The take-home exam will consist of three or four broadly-stated essay questions, each asking for discussion of the principal arguments or ideas in one or more sections of the course. The answer to each question should consist of four or five well-considered paragraphs that deploy specifics from the cases to support arguments and illustrate ideas.
