Wuthering Heights: A Love Story

related to Catherine in someway. He wishes to torment those who were able to spend time with Catherine for all the years of his absence. By marrying Edgar Linton’s sister, Heathcliff is able exact his revenge on Edgar by making his sister’s life miserable. Also, by forcing Edgar’s only daughter, Cathy, to marry his son, he takes revenge on Edgar by gaining all of his property and making his daughter suffer. The love Heathcliff holds for Catherine is demented and repulsive, because it makes him a heartless villain who gives no thought to his actions as long as his final goal is achieved.

From one self-destructive compulsive decision made by Catherine, the fate of two families were torn asunder and distorted to form a new world so revolting that it ultimately caused the death of those living within it. Bronte manipulates love in order to portray the subtlety of love in a way not seen before. She cajoles the delicate features of love to create a monstrous atrocity, to show us that things are not always the way they are believed to be. From the love emitted by Catherine and Heathcliff, we see love transformed into a vicious and repulsive thing. Wuthering Heights tells a tale of love not seen in fairy tales; but rather one that may be experienced by even those of high society protected by the walls of wealth.
