Act One Scene One of Hamlet
In Act One Scene One Marcellus and Bernardo who are the Kings guards are telling Horatio, Hamlets friend, that they have seen a ghost that looks like his father the past two nights. Well, Horatio doesn’t believe them so he stands guard with them the next night. Just like the past two nights the ghost appears. Horatio tries to speak to it but it turns and leaves. All three guys come to the conclusion they should tell Hamlet.
Act One Scene Two consists of mainly Claudius, Gertrude, Hamlet, and at the end Horatio, Marcellus, and Bernardo. In the beginning Claudius, his uncle, and his mom Gertrude are telling him it’s rude to be still mourning over somebody this long. Hamlet of course disagrees and wants to back to school but is going to do what ever his mom says for him to do. Claudius and Gertrude leave and Hamlet is left alone and he talks to himself about how bad it is for his mom to be remarried already. Then Horatio, Marcellus, and Bernardo come in. They tell Hamlet about the ghost and he insists on seeing it.
Scene Three is about Laertes trying to tell Ophelia that she shouldn’t fall in love with Hamlet. She say’s he a great guy but so Laertes tells her just to be careful. Then Polonius, Ophelia and Laertes father walks in. He hears what their talking about and tell Ophelia that she needs to stay away from Hamlet.
Scene Four is about Hamlet, Horatio, Marcellus, and Bernardo on duty and looking out for the ghost. The ghost appears and Hamlet can’t believe his eyes. Hamlet asks him if he wants them to do anything but the ghost doesn’t respond. Instead of responding the ghost waves on Hamlet like he wants to talk to him. All the guys are telling Hamlet not to follow him but Hamlet disagrees and goes with the ghost.
Scene Five is the conversation between the ghost and Hamlet. The ghost tells Hamlet the he is upset and wants revenge on Claudius and Gertrude. He says it was wrong the Claudius is married to his wife and he should pay for that. He says nothing should happen to Gertrude but for her conscience get to her. Hamlet agrees and the ghost leaves. Then Hamlet makes all the guys swear on his sword that they won’t tell.
In the book Hamlet I have noticed in the first Act that Shakespeare uses a lot of comparisons. With him using comparisons throughout the first Act it helps you understand what he is trying to say. For example in Act One Scene Two after Claudius and Gertrude have left, Hamlet is talking to himself about how he disagrees with his mother and Uncle already remarried and how his father was a loving and loyal king. “So excellent a king, that was to this Hyperion [next page]
