Immigrant saw little of this prosperity.

The “American dream” that many immigrants were chasing when they first stepped on to American soil ended up being nothing more than a fallacy for most; an unattainable goal. The experience of Upton Sinclair’s character Jurgis Rudkis was not that of the “American Dream” but the “American Nightmare.” In the end Jurgis did finally find a new hope to cling onto. Hope of a better day, if not for him, for his children and his children’s children. This new hope was found in the Ideology of Socialism. Socialism was of course contrary to the ideals of capitalism, which was one of the driving forces that flung America to the forefront of world economic power, but how could one blame Jurgis for clinging to whatever he could find hope in. After all, is hope not the thing that humans get their lifeblood from, their will to live and face tomorrow?
