In Act 1 Scene 1 of the play it starts with two men from pizza. One called Lucentio and the other his servant tranio. They both oversee the problem of two men called hortensio and gremoi who are in love with Bianca a young beautiful girl who cant be married until her older suister katherina is firstdue to the wishe sof their farther Baptistab who happens to be gremois neighbour. The quandary is thatkatherina is very ill tempered and disobedientwhich is causing her to receive any problems.
When lucentiom sees bisanca he ammediatly falls in love with hwre. Convieniently he over hears baptista stating he need tutors for his daughters. Lucentio decide s to get rid of his true identy and pose as a scholl headmaster in order to get closer to bianca. Meanwhile he gets his servsant tranioto to take his own place and so tranio became lucentio and lucentio became Head master Cambio.Lucentio also tells tranio to pose as a suitor for Bianca.
Meanwhile old gremio and hortensio work together to form a plot to find a husband for the shrewish katherina in order to free Bianca for themselves to rival over.the plan is to tremp the man for katherina’s dowry since baptista is a wealthy man.
This scene is important to the subject of marriage because eit shows how beuty pkays a large part in marriage Bianca was very beutifulso she attracted many men “…; But see while idly I stood lookin I found the effect of love in idleness…”. This shows that lucentio hadn’t even known Bianca before falling in love her which prove sthat he based his attraction purely o her appearance. To a modern audience this would seem very superficial as Bianca is receiving attention and proposals because due to her looks and today we are taught to give everybody a chance regardless of their appearance and also never to base love on looks.
The next scen introduces a man calle petruchio who is a friend of hortensio and soon to be the main man of Hortensio and gremios plot. Petruchio informs Baptista of his interestb to marry katherina. Katherina hates the idea of marrying petruchio unlike her fathe who obliges.
