The Aguero Sisters

as to why Ignacio killed his wife when in fact there was not.

A quote from the book that made me think a lot was when Reina said “ I guess it’s less painful to forget than to remember”(Garcia, 174). This made me think a lot about my own experiences and how when bad things happen I try to forget about them as opposed to remembering them and learning from my mistakes. Yet when I read this quotation it made me think about how maybe it is better to remind yourself of things even though it hurts to reminisce about the past, the past could help you get through the present.

The second quote that I found was said by Reina’s daughter Dulce, “I ate a sandwich like that once in Cuba, years ago, before the hard times hit. It made me realize how close we are to forgetting everything, how close we are to not existing at all”(Garcia, 288). This quote also made me think a lot about how people take the little things in life for granted. Also how everyday should be lived to its fullest because it could be your last. People often forget the things that are really important in life and that is also expressed in these few words.

I chose this book because when Mr. Jimenez summarized the book I felt that it would hold my interest. I also wanted to find out how the girls mother was killed. The book seemed like something different to what I was accustomed to reading and that was also a huge factor in why I chose to read it as well. I am glad that I read The Aguero Sisters, because I feel that it broadened my horizons and also gave me something to do instead of sitting on the computer talking on AOL, or watching television.

All and all I think that The Aguero Sisters was a very well written book. The author kept the reader interested. I would recommend this book to anyone who has Cuban roots because I feel as though they could appreciate this book for all of its perspectives. Cristina Garcia had a really captivating voice that made the reader want to envision what was going on in the book at that specific time. Yet I feel like I couldn’t appreciate the book to its full potential, because there were a lot of little comments made throughout the book in Spanish and I did not understand all of them.

I would also recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about things that really did happen in a lighter tone. I know that this book would not have kept my interest for a second if it did not include the little funny comments and was lacking the personality that kept me wanting to read on to the next chapter.
