The analysis of "The Client" by John Grisham

<...> It took them (the Mafia) about year to find him. They killed his wife too.” (pg. 398)

Due to the influence of movies Mark sees life in cinematic terms. How did Mark understand that Jerome Clifford was going to kill himself? How did he realise that his little brother was in shock? How did he know that all the calls to 911 were recorded? The films, TV programmes have taught him all this and much more, they have taught him the secrets of life. The first impression of Mark as an ordinary street boy, heavy smoker being only eleven years old languishes with each uttered word, with each action, the reader begins conceiving him as a thinker, worrier, sophisticated child, his attitude to everything is fascinating, he talks, thinks and acts as a boy who has had a disadvantaged life:

“<...> My father wanted some visitation rights, and I spent a lot of time explaining to the judge that I had no desire to ever see the man again once the trial was over. Mark feels great penitence for letting his brother witness that awful crime, he blames only himself: “Why oh why didn’t they just run when the black car pulled up and parked? He was suddenly hit with guilt, and it terrified him. All of this was his fault. He should have known better than to mess with a crazy man.” (pg. 74) There is a saying, that love for the family is the basis of all the virtues, and Mark’s relationship with his mother is enviable. Dianne Sway, Mark’s mother, is a woman, who can fight for her sons with tooth and nail, from a purring kitty she can turn into a fierce panther if somebody wants to hurt her child: “ ‘Go to hell,’ she snapped. ‘If you take him, you whip me first.’ ” (pg. 291) Mark and his mother have gone through a lot together and have totally trusted each other. All their tortures have forged a bond much deeper than any ordinary mother-son relationship: “He prayed for the safety of his mother. He asked God for a [next page]
