Holden made the mistake of saying yes, he was aware of it because he stated that it was against his morals, but he was desperate and depressed. He kept both ideas in mind and while he went for the stupid choice, the fact that he stated that it was against his principals , shows very clearly that some maturity lies within Holden’s mMind. But when it gets right down to it, he is exploring hishe sexual desires, which automatically makes him a more sound man.

Lastly, Holden finds his true supporters in life. Holden is the type of person who at some point or another needs advice, as well as, a shoulder to cry on. Towards the end of the book, dDespite all he has been through, there is one person that has stayed to help and to love him, Phoebe. Holden has finally finished his endeavor in the city, coming away, a little more down but at the same time a little more independent and adult like. He heads home to see, not his parents, but his sister Phoebe.

In conclusion, Holden attempts to become a self-dependent adult figure, to prove to himself that he is no longer a child, and by creating an environment and making decisions that would ultimately create the person that he seeks in his eyes. Through the ordeals with the city life, sex, and knowing who is truly there for him, Holden effectively, becomes an adult. Holden’s original goal was to attain total independence,: he succeeded. more or less.
