The Comeback Challenge By Matt Christopher (Author) Book Report

The book illustrates a young twelve year old boy name Mark Conway. He is faced with his parents being separated and filing for divorce. They spent so much time fueding over him that the court decided to let him live with his grandparents in Knightstown until the custody battle was settle. Mark wa happy to stay with his grandparents. He was tired of hearing his parents arguing, slamming doors, shouting, and using him as ammunition against each other. He enjoyed being around his grandparents. They would always find time for him and he could talk to them about anything. His grandmother would bake his favorite meals. His grandfather would take him fishing and hunting.

Mark did not let his parents problems stop him from trying out for the Knightstown Middle School soccer team. He was so excited it took him three tries to open his combination locker at school. He met a old playmate named Craig Crandal on the soccer team. Craig was in Mark Math and History class too. They became real close friends. Craig and Mark would walk to school every morning together. Craig notice that Mark had a problem with the team captain Vince Loman. He adviced Mark to confron Vince about it. He told Mark that team players should try to get along. Vince had a grudge against Mark since the other team players admired his great soccer skills. Mark decided to listen to Craig suggestion and wait for Vince after school near his bicycle. He confronted Vince about the way he was treating him on the soccer team. He explained to him that attitude problems are bad for the soccer team. He told him that we should try working on being friends and concentrate on winning the soccer games instead of disliking each other. Vince and Mark started playing better soccer together and the team won the national soccer championship. Vince was nominated as the most valuable player and Mark was voted the captain for the soccer team, the following year.

Mark parents was deeply envolved with their careers and had no time for him. his parents thought taking him shopping and sending him on camping trips was enough love. Mark had develop a lot of anger in his heart against them. he decided to confront them about the matter. He tricked his parents over and explained to them how he felt about the divorce and how he was tired of them playing tugged a war with him. He told them that he wanted to continue living with his grandparents until he graduate from high school. They agreed to let him live with his grandparents.

The book is a good example for kids to understand how to talk about their problems with other friends and find a quick solution. I enjoyed reading the book and expecially since soccer is one of my favorite sports. Mark Conway had a strong will to overcome his problems. he was very courageous for a twelve year old.
