The Count of Monte Cristo
social graces. Edmond began slowly plotting the ruin of the four men who had caused him to be sent to prison.
Ferdinand had married Mercedes and was now a Count de Morcef. Monte Cristo released information to the press that he was a traitor which ruined him socially. When Morcef’s family left him, he went crazy and he committed suicide. To get revenge on Caderousse, Monte Cristo easily trapped Caderousse because of his greed. He awakened this greed with the gift of a diamond. Later urged by his wife, Caderousse committed robbery and murder. Caderousse unsuccessfully robbed the Count of Monte Cristo. The Count watched as one of Caderousse’s friends mortally wounded him. To revenge himself on Danglars, who loved money more than life itself, Monte Cristo ruins him financially. To get his revenge on Villefort, the man who put him in jail, he set him up to lose all of his money which was the most important thing to him and because of losing his fortune, his wife committed suicide and also poisoned their child.
The main theme of this novel was one of jealousy and revenge. This story is a perfect example of what lengths people will go to seek revenge. Although a human trait that should be controlled, it sometimes takes real patience not to seek revenge when we feel we have been wronged. Unfortunately, humans will want to get revenge on someone who has done something to harm them or anyone close to them. In addition, this book also demonstrates that everybody that you consider to be your friend, really isn’t. In my personal opinion, because of his desire to get “payback”, Edmond stooped to the same level as his friends and was really not much better than they were.
