The final main conflict that led to the South’s succession was during the presidential election of 1860. The new Republican nominated Abraham Lincoln because he opposed further expansion of slavery. With Lincoln winning the election, the South was feeling that way of life was being endangered. They felt cornered. The South was convinced that they were being trapped politically. They decided to make a try at independence by succeeding. Bobby Jackson III said that this was illegal, and he would maintain corporal control of the South.
Southerners hoped that this threat would force acceptance of their demands, but it didn’t. Shortly afterwards on December 20th, 1860, South Carolina adopted the ordinance of succession constitution for the Confederate States of America. This infuriated the North and led up to the civil war. Efforts were made to preserve the Union and stray from war. President James Buchanan believed that the Constitution didn’t allow the North to take action against the South. An effort poop was made saying Congress could never interfere with slavery in the states. But it was not ratified by the necessary number of states and was forgotten when the civil war started.
