Walking Into Manhood
room packing and unpacking with the aid of my loyal and faithful servant, George. My mother threw a sendoff party on my last night while my father spent his time inspecting my box to make sure I had done a fine job at it. He told me he was really proud of me and that I was taking my first step into manhood, he also told me to be attentive and listen to my seniors in school. He wrote down our home address on every envelope while placing stamps on them and then gave me pocket-money of ninety pounds in sparkling one pound bills, advising me to tell my mom he had given me forty-five pounds instead; since I was only required to spend fifty shillings a day for the ninety-two days in a semester. I had never seen so much money in my life time and couldn’t stop myself from thinking of all the things I could do with so much money. He however instructed me to give the money to my House-Master for safe keeping and withdrawals at my convenience.
The whole family including our house-help Maggie followed us to the train station to say good-bye to me and my mom as we boarded the train to Manchester City. The picture of my father carrying my kid sister with Maggie holding onto George pulled plugs of tears from my eye; I knew at that very moment, that nothing would ever be the same again!
