War In The 1920's

Many things changed in the 1920’s to the 1930’s. Living in the 1920’s was much different then living in the 1930’s. Times in the 1920’s were very easy times and life was good for most people. However, in the 1930’s life changed very much. It went from a time of plenty to the disaster in the economy known as the Great Depression. American society was much different in the 1920’s then American society was in the 1930’s especially in the areas of economics, society, and politics.

The economy in the 1920’s was very different from the economy in the 1930’s. The 1920’s were known as the roaring 20’s If you look at Document 11 you can see that stock prices fell drastically in the year between 1929 and 1930. During the 20’s people were buying stock on credit and the government was keeping its “hands off” business. However, in the 30’s times were much different. In the 30’s is when America was going through the Great Depression. Millions of people lost their fortunes virtually over night you can see the fall in stock prices in Document 11. Many people committed suicide not being able to handle the change. In Document 7 you can see the huge increase in unemployed people. It went from a couple of hundred in the mid to late 20’s to over twelve thousand in the mid to early 30’s. There were many programs set up to try to boost America’s economy but none helped. As you can see in Document 5 the N.R.A. was one of the programs of the “New Deal.” As you can see the economy was much different in the 1920’s then it was in the 1930’s. However, the economy was not the only thing that changed with the time society also changed.

Society changed drastically from the 20’s to the 30’s. The 20’s got the nickname ass the jazz age. In Document 4 you can see one of the many Jazz players; Louie Armstrong. With the music scene exploding people started to buy radios. In Document 1 you can see the large jump in the number of households with a radio. This jump went from a mere 20,000 to over 12,750,000 in 1930. This led to millions of people hearing about Lindberg’s solo flight across the Atlantic. Lindberg was a very good pilot and you can see a picture of him in Document 2. Not only did music change but also so did the way people lived. In the 20’s there was a lot of prohibition. Alcoholic beverages were banned from the United States. Document 3 proves that women liked the new law. Without alcohol the U.S. was a better place to live. However, this only led to the creating of “speak-easies”, places where people could go to have a drink and dance. In these speak easies women were starting to become braver in their dancing styles.
