Was evacuation a good idea
the police. There are hundreds of other stories, including Terri McNeil who was locked in a birdcage and left with a chunk of bread and a bowl of water. A survey shows that out of nearly 450 ex-evacuees, 54 (12 %) say they suffered some sort of mental, physical or specifically sexual abuse.
On the other hand, many luckier evacuees had a great time, and there are even instances where the hosts later adopted the children they cared for. Norma Reeve, from a lower class background in the East End, was taken in by a titled lady with servants and a butler who served Norma her meals. She remembers little things like being taken to the pictures, learning to bake bread and walks in the forest. For many it was a life-enhancing, mind-broadening experience, leaving them with memories they treasure to this day.
After researching this topic I conclude that in my opinion Evacuation was a good idea-although, it was a huge task to complete and I do not believe the government spent enough time sorting homes and matching evacuees with compatible hosts. There are many terrible stories of mistreated evacuees but there are also many happier stories of hosts and their evacuees forming lifelong bonds.
