What is Appalachia

stated earlier there have been many tourist programs instituted, as well as government incentives to encourage manufactures to build in these areas. These incentives coupled with large road building projects have done much to help the poverty situation.

Culturally the Appalachian region is very rich. It is largely made up of families and people who had to learn to make it with what they had available to them. This lifestyle has affected every aspect of Appalachian society. The families in the Appalachian region know how to survive. Many families live relatively simple lives compared to other regions in the United States. This has caused the formation of the stereotypes that have been associated with “Mountain People” over the years.

The one cultural influence form Appalachia that has affected the rest of the country the most is probably its musical heritage. The music from Appalachia has made its way into, and changed much of the music we hear today. The “Mountain People” came up with their own ways to make music, and enjoy life. It was in this that they were able to create their own style of music, which is very distinct.

Because of their resourcefulness, many Appalachian people have a strong background in crafts, and hand made items. Personally I do not know any of the ladies in my family who can not sew, and make quilts, and other such items. Woodwork is also common among the Appalachian people. Although now most of the time it is done as more of a hobby, or by artisans, in the past people made hand made products, because they had no other means to get them.

So you ask where Appalachia is, or who is an Appalachian? I surmise that being Appalachian is not just living in a geographical location, but is also a philosophy of life. Someone famous once said, “Once a king or queen in Appalachia, always a king or queen in Appalachia”. Alright, so maybe that was not the exact quote, but the point is clear.
