Which European Power was Strongest in 1914?

German navy was also very strong, beaten only by Great Britain. But Germany had the now infamous U-boats which were giant submarines capable of destroying enemy ships and tankers. This, once again, was due to its steel and coal productivity which served as an extremely important factor.

Germany was very keen on industrialization and was looking to expand both the number of colonies and the number of factories. Before the war, people had low wages, expensive food and bad working conditions. Strikes and trade unions were becoming increasingly frequent. A war would mean that this depression would lift. More jobs and

positions would be available for people to fill such as in factories and in the army. A war would also give people a reason to fight and strive for.

Despite all its imperfections in various fields such as in the number and size of colonies, Germany seems to be the strongest nation due to the size and strength of its army and also due to the bad economic state which would improve should a war occur.
