Who is Albert Woo?
Albert Woo is the stereotypical version of what many people classify Asian men. Why are we more comfortable of Asian men as warriors and laborers? Asian Men are often portrayed in movies as blood-thirsty warriors. A film like Foreign Ghosts puts this stereotype in our mind. This is what we had been seeing in the movies for the past years.
Stereotyping often leads people to get the wrong impression about certain Asian ethnic groups. For this reason, many people have different beliefs relating to Asians in general. Non-Asians think we’re all the same. They don’t really see the difference between a Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese.
Interracial marriages were not accepted in Asian culture. They see a person in an interracial relationship as taking advantage of the power they can get from it. According to Hunt Hoe, it’s not a crime to marry someone of your own culture. It was hard for Asian men to look for a woman of a different race. Most of them were “mommies’ boys”. They end up looking for a wife similar to their moms.
Most of the Asian fathers seemed unapproachable to their children. Fathers don’t say “I love you” to their kids. They show their love through providing for the family. And all they want from their kid in return is to do well in school. On the other hand, young kids feel they are being neglected when their fathers are not affectionate. They don’t understand the hardship of their parents until they’re grown up. A common misperception of Asians is being passive. Men are taught to be silent and not question. They don’t want to challenge everybody because you’ll get confrontations. This is a problem with the Asian culture. Staying quiet can lead to misinterpretations and misunderstandings. To be misunderstood is upsetting. The code of silence is a problem in our modern society. We have to give voice to the silence to realize who we are.
The typical stereotypes of Asian men are usually viewed negative. Many non-Asians do not view the other perspective of Asian men; they portray their image as a role model to their family. It is up to the future generation to improve the image of the Asian men.
