Big Nipples
Recently our House of Representatives and our Senate have overwhelmingly passed a resolution allowing President Bush to take action in Iraq against Saddam Hussein’s regime. However, I believe that this decision to grant the power to invade Iraq was given very prematurely, for the wrong motives, and without true backing by the people of the United States. The problem with all this is that we live in a democracy and a democracy is based upon expressing the voice of the people and making sound, well thought out, rational decisions. I feel as if President Bush has unjustly pressured congress into passing the war resolution and for all the wrong reasons.
The last time that we invaded Iraq was because of their aggression towards Kuwait. However, Bush has no real basis for why we should be invading Iraq other than the fact he labeled the country as an Axis of Evil. Iraq has made no aggressive moves towards any surrounding country or the United States. If anything we should be going after North Korea and their newly announced testing of nuclear missile launching devices that can reach the continental United States.
Another problem with the passing of the resolution is that it appears to be for all the wrong reasons. Bush has not given an actual reason for why we should invade Iraq other than the fact that they are a member of the Axis of Evil and have committed human rights violations. However, China commits human rights violations constantly, but you do not see us invading them. Aside from this fact, it appears as if we are only motivated to make a buck out of the war. Iraq contains the world’s 2nd largest oil reserves. With Saddam out of power it opens up Iraq to foreign oil companies. With all 5 major members of the U.N. Security Council with oil companies with stakes in the region the reasons for invading Iraq become even more blatant. Also not to mention that Vice President Cheney was also a C.E.O of a Dallas based oil company prior to taking office.
My final plight with the passing of the resolution comes with the fact that it is not representative of the people’s will. In an October 7th poll it showed that only 30% of America thought we should take action soon. Also it showed that 65% of Americans believed that we should wait for allies to join in on the war effort. Clearly elected officials are not expressing the will of the United States people. The ironic part of it is that if we do go to war with Iraq then the same people who do not want war will be sent into battle, not the people that actually chose to go to war. This means that 7 out of every 10 Americans that would [next page]
