ANZ banking
The first Australian and New Zealand banking group limited (ANZ) was established in Melbourne the 1830’s. Melbourne is the ANZ world headquarters and most, if not all, official business is held there. In 1835 this bank was known as the ‘Bank of Australasia.’
The ANZ bank has a full and extensive history dating back over 150 years. (Page four through seven of report notes). Some of the highlights of the ANZ career are:
· ANZ began in London when The Bank of Australasia was established under Royal charter (1835) followed by several other bank openings in other countries
· ANZ (PNG) established (1976)
· Acquires 75 per cent of Bank of Western Samoa (1991)
· Opens a commercial banking branch in Manila, Philippines, the first Australian and New Zealand bank to do so (1995)
· www.anz.com launched (1996)
· ANZ Phone Banking launched (1997)
· ANZ Internet Banking launched (1999)
· ANZ announces strategic alliance with E*Trade Australia for online share trading service (1999)
· ANZ East Timor opens (2001)
· One millionth customer registers for ANZ Internet Banking in Australia (2002)
ANZ values its customers and therefore has the following pollices in place to make sure that its customers and investors are as happy and confident in the bank as possible.
· Put customers first
· Perform and grow to create value for shareholders
· Lead and inspire each other
· Earn the trust of the community
· Breakout, be bold and have the courage to be different
The ANZ organization chose these values because they found that through their research the general public are more likely to understand and trust an organization that has the same or similar values to their own.
ANZ plays a big role in the financial arena because they have at present 744 branches in Australia alone (see page 7 of research notes) in. They have branches in several other countries such as Papua New Guinea, Asia, Western Samoa and Fiji. Worldwide ANZ employ over 22,482 people and 15,879 of those jobs have been created for Australians in the Australian economy. ANZ also have 199,556 shareholders invested in them, so they are a trusted business, some may even call the shares they hold blue chip shares. 1994 the ANZ had 1,208 branches and 39,642 employees worldwide; in 1997 there was a drastic decline in branches in Australia, it went from 1,070 in 1996 to 868 in 1997. A drastic decline in Australian employees happened in 1997/1998, the number fell 3718. This may have been due to the launch of ANZ online in 1996 or it could have been due to a number of contributing factors such as the wide availability of automatic teller machines (ATM’s), technological advances or [next page]
