A Child Called It

win. He figures out that if he doesn’t show any weakness he will win. Due to this new way of looking at life Dave starts to make all the mother’s chores, he doesn’t start to cry when he’s being beaten and he doesn’t stand up when she beats him, instead he just lies down after some hits.

His will to live is strong, so strong and it pays off. After seven years of living hell he’s rescued from the mother and the family. Dave is 12 years old.

- My Own Thoughts –

What to say? This is one of the most frightening books I’ve ever read.

With a mother who stabs you with knife, forces you to eat poop and ammonia and tries to fry you over a fire?

If I wouldn’t have known that it was a true story I should say that the story was unrealistic. No one can live such a life and survive, but Dave did. His strength and will to live must be incredible strong. To decide that if he just can take all the shit he somehow will escape and survive, you have to have a mind of steel.

What also fascinates me is the way he reason to get food. You see when he didn’t get any food at home he tried to steal food from the other pupils or from some store. He always planned everything and it’s quite cool when you think about Dave’s age. He’s just a little child. This shows us the men’s way to act to survive.

Well, now some words about the book’s style.

A Child Called It is an autobiography; you can’t expect the guy to use some special kind of technique. Dave got a story to tell and that’s it.

The language is easy and makes the book to an alternative both for me, my nine year old cousin (if he only could have read English) and my grandmother.

Dave wrote this book to show the cruelty of child abuse and to remind us of that everything isn’t always what it seems to be. He also encourages millions of people to stand up against this kind of horror.

I can’t say that I enjoyed this book; some pages really got my mind twisted.

You see, I can’t remember when I didn’t want to finish a book last time but A Child Called It gave me this feeling.

Even though you know the kid survives you don’t want to turn page and read about the next cruelty the alcoholic mother will pass on him.

Finally, this is a book you should read but it isn’t for the faint of heart.
