American Ingenuity and Invention
This is what Bell says on his opinion of Gray, “When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us” (Yuni). Oscar Stuart vs. Ned was a case about a black slave, named Ned, who invented the double cotton scraper, which was claimed to have been made by Oscar Stuart. The government decided to give Stuart the patent because black people were not officially citizens. Eventually the United States government gave black people the right to their inventions and the ability to patent them, giving Ned the patent to his double cotton scraper.
The age of ingenuity and invention is but a small part of the American experience, but it is still an essential piece that the American experience can not be without. Invention in America is what keeps the country innovative and ahead of its competitors. Advancing in technology is what keeps the United States of America alive and also shows what we are all about. It was best said by Orville Wright, “If we all worked on the assumption that what is accepted as true is really true, there would be little hope of advance” (Brainy). The people of America have to keep changing their ideas and not just keeping a one track mind so we can stay on the same pace we have set for ourselves many years ago.
