Carl Gustav Jung
One of the most influential people in psychology is Carl Jung. Carl Jung was born on July 26, 1875 in Kesswil, a small village near Romanshorn on Lake Constance, in the Swiss canton of Thurgau. Carl Jung was the second born child of Johann Paul Achilles Jung, Ph.D and his wife, Emilie nee Preiswerk. Johann and Emilie’s firstborn child had died after a few days after his birth. Carl Jung was an only child until the age nine when his sister, Johanna Gertrud Jung was born. Her nickname was Trudi. Carl Jung died in 6 June 1961 in his home in Kusnacht. His funeral was on June 9, 1961 in the Kusnacht cemetery. (Wehr, 1988)
At age twenty-one, Carl Jung first saw a sixteen year old girl by the name of Emma Rauschenbach. Even before he spoke to her, he knew she would be his wife. Emma came from an old Swiss German family and was an educated beautiful woman. She was the daughter of wealthy industrialist, and this gave Carl financial freedom to pursue his own work and interests. Carl and Emma were married on February 14, 1903 just after seven years they first met. The married couple first lived in rooms at the Burgholzli, and then on 1909, they build a house on the lake at Kusnacht, near Zurich. Carl and Emma had five children. They had 4 daughters and one son. Their four daughters were Agathe Niehus born in December 28, 1904, Gret Baumann born in February 8, 1906, Marianne Niehus born in September 20, 1910, and Helene born in March 18, 1914. Their only son was Franz Jung-Merker born in November 28, 1908. (Wehr, 1988)
Carl Jung was enrolled in the medical curriculum at the University of Basel on April, 18 1875. As he was completing his studies in Basel in July 1900, he decided to specialized in Psychiatry and beginning to look for his first professional position. By the age twenty-five, he applied for a position as a volunteer at the Burgholzli, the psychiatric clinic of the University of Zurich. Carl became an assistant at the Burgholzli psychiatric clinic in Zurich under Professor Eugen Bleulen. (Wehr, 1988)
Carl Jung was not just a professional doctor, but also was a researcher, scientist, and a lecturer. Carl Jung was a doctor when he applied to be a volunteer in Burgholzli, and when he was doing his service in the military. He was a doctor for the Medical Corps AT Chateaux-d Oex. When Carl Jung first started to be his researcher or a scientist is when he met Sigmund Freud in 1906. Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud have been researching together on Psychoanalysis. Carl Jung has also researched on schizophrenia, archetypes, Jungian Analysis, Analytical Psychology, Anima, and Animus. Carl Jung is also a lecturer. In August 1913, Carl Jung did lectures to the Psycho-Medical Society in London to designate his research on “analytical psychology.” In 1936, he also lectured at the Tercentenary Conference on the topic of Psychological Factors Determining Human Behavior.
