Challenging Experience
I always thought I was a perfect team player. But there was one experience that tested the limits of my team working skills and helped me identify my challenges in working with a group.
I was leading a project for my previous company that had filed for bankruptcy protection and was slowly sinking. The number of employees in the company had decreased from 300 to less than a dozen in six months. This engagement was the sole remaining revenue-generating project and was being developed on contract for an important client. Several members who were working on the project on behalf of the company had left, exacerbating the challenges.
The remaining employees on the project were totally demoralized and they, obviously, were trying to find new jobs. Many of the essential tasks that were supposed to have been completed were in disarray. My biggest challenge was keeping the group motivated and focused to accomplish the collective goal.
I first worked to understand the team’s perspectives. I developed a personal rapport with each member and the management team. I appealed to their common sense and emotions by highlighting the importance of the revenue from this project and how it could even help our company come out of bankruptcy.
